Every morning I get up an hour or so after my husband has left for work and make my way into the kitchen for my cup of tea. Every morning the first thing I see on the kitchen counter is a 2" by 2" yellow post-it note. Just the sight of it makes me smile because it is a love note from my husband.

His loves notes are always written in red ink and most often contain a heart and an “I love you” along with a few lines of whatever he’s thinking about usually with regard to me and our life together. They are sometimes romantic, sometimes funny, sometimes witty, and once in a while, they are apologetic. They are always a welcome start to my day.

His love notes aren’t just good for me though. They are good for him. Research shows that writing, in general, is good for us. It helps us to process our thoughts and emotions. Writing love notes or notes expressing gratitude, kindness, or friendship puts us in a positive frame of mind and helps us to focus on what is good and right with our world rather than what is wrong with it. It has even been shown to be good for our health in many ways. (See this summary of the research on gratitude.)

It is a very good way to start your mornings on a high note. So why not give it a try and make both yourself and someone else a little happier?
